A Family Journey Through Kashmir: A May 2024 Travel Diary
In May 2024, we finally took the family trip we had been dreaming about for years — a journey to Kashmir with my wife and our 8-year-old daughter. Spring was at its peak, and the valley welcomed us with cool mountain air, blooming meadows, and landscapes that felt almost unreal. What followed was not just a vacation, but a sequence of vivid moments stitched together into memories we will carry forever.
Arrival in Srinagar: The Gateway to Paradise
Our journey into Kashmir began the moment we landed in Srinagar, and even from the airport, the scenery hinted at the beauty that awaited us. Snow-dusted mountains stood quietly in the distance, and the cool May breeze carried a freshness we rarely experience in city life. The drive from the airport to the city was our first real introduction to the valley — rows of tall poplar trees lined the roads, local markets buzzed gently with activity, and glimpses of the Jhelum River appeared between old wooden houses and traditional Kashmiri architecture.
Checking into our hotel, we were welcomed with warm Kashmiri hospitality and a cup of fragrant kahwa. Our 8-year-old daughter was immediately curious about everything — from the traditional décor to the colorful handicrafts displayed in nearby shops. After a short rest, we headed straight to the iconic Dal Lake, the heart and soul of Srinagar.
“Our family discovers Dal Lake’s serenity, warm hospitality, and breathtaking mountain views, beginning a magical Kashmir adventure.”
The sight of Dal Lake was mesmerizing. The water stretched out like a giant mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains and the soft evening sky. Dozens of brightly painted shikaras floated gracefully, each decorated with vibrant cushions and intricate patterns. We boarded one for a leisurely ride, and as the boatman gently rowed us across the calm water, the city’s noise faded into a peaceful silence.
Floating markets drifted past us — vendors selling flowers, souvenirs, and local crafts directly from their boats. Our daughter watched in fascination as ducks swam alongside the shikara and ripples danced across the lake’s surface. The air smelled faintly of fresh water and blooming flowers from the floating gardens. As the sun began to set, the sky transformed into shades of gold and pink, casting a magical glow over the lake.
In that quiet moment, surrounded by still water and distant mountain silhouettes, we felt a deep sense of calm. It was more than just a scenic experience; it was the perfect beginning to our family adventure. Srinagar welcomed us not with grandeur alone, but with a gentle serenity that invited us to slow down, breathe deeply, and fully embrace the beauty of Kashmir.
Gulmarg: Snow, Meadows, and Childlike Wonder
Our journey to Gulmarg felt like a gradual ascent into a different world. The drive from Srinagar wound through scenic mountain roads bordered by dense pine forests and small villages, where children waved as we passed. As we climbed higher, the air grew cooler and crisper, and the landscape slowly transformed into vast open meadows framed by towering peaks.
When we finally reached Gulmarg, the view was breathtaking. Endless stretches of green grass rolled gently toward snow-capped mountains, creating a striking contrast of colors. The famous Gulmarg Gondola ride was the highlight of our visit. As we boarded the cable car and began ascending, the scenery unfolded beneath us like a living postcard. Pine trees shrank into miniature shapes, and patches of snow appeared more frequently as we gained altitude.
“In Gulmarg, our family enjoys snowy peaks, gondola rides, playful snow moments, and peaceful meadows, sharing laughter and unforgettable mountain memories together.”
At the higher station, we stepped out into a winter-like landscape despite it being May. Fresh snow lay scattered across the ground, sparkling under the bright sun. For our 8-year-old daughter, it was a dream come true — her first real encounter with snow. She laughed uncontrollably as she scooped up handfuls of it, attempting her first snowball throw. Soon we were all involved in a playful snowball fight, our laughter echoing across the quiet slopes.
We spent time simply walking around, taking in the panoramic Himalayan views. The sky felt impossibly wide and clear, and the silence of the mountains carried a peaceful intensity. Local guides offered sled rides and photography spots, and we paused often to capture family pictures against the dramatic snowy backdrop.
Back in the meadow area, we enjoyed a gentle walk surrounded by wildflowers and grazing horses. The open landscape invited us to slow down and appreciate the simplicity of nature. Our daughter ran freely across the grass, her excitement contagious. Watching her experience Gulmarg with pure joy reminded us how travel can reconnect adults with their own sense of wonder.
As the day drew to a close and we prepared to leave, Gulmarg lingered in our minds as a place where seasons seemed to blend — where spring met winter, and where our family shared moments of laughter, discovery, and awe. It was not just a destination we visited, but an experience that deepened our bond and added another vivid chapter to our Kashmir journey.
Exploring Hidden Gems: Lolab Valley and Doodhpathri
Our journey extended beyond the popular spots. Lolab Valley offered a quieter, more intimate experience. The valley’s untouched charm and serene atmosphere made it feel like a secret shared only with those willing to wander off the usual path.
Doodhpathri, with its lush grasslands and milky white streams, was equally enchanting. The flowing water shimmered in the sunlight, and the open meadows invited us to sit, relax, and simply exist in the moment. We shared snacks, stories, and laughter while surrounded by sweeping views.
A Trip That Became a Memory
Traveling through Kashmir with my wife and daughter transformed the trip into something deeply personal. Every destination carried not just scenic beauty, but shared experiences — the first touch of snow, quiet boat rides, spontaneous laughter, and the joy of discovery through a child’s eyes.
Kashmir in May was vibrant yet gentle, adventurous yet peaceful. It gave us a rare gift: uninterrupted time together in one of the most beautiful places on earth. As we left, we carried back more than photographs — we brought home a collection of moments that continue to glow warmly in our memories.
This journey was not just a tour of destinations; it was a visual and emotional tapestry of family, nature, and wonder — a reminder that the best travels are the ones shared with the people you love most.
