A Family Photographic Journey Through the Dooars Forests & Wildlife

At the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, we discovered a side of North Bengal that felt completely different from anywhere else we had been. As a family, we often chase mountains, sunsets, and quiet landscapes — but Dooars surprised us in the best possible way. It wasn’t just scenic; it felt alive.

Often combined with a visit to Darjeeling, Dooars offered us a dramatic shift in mood. Where the hills gave us toy trains and tea views, the forests of Dooars gave us misty trails, wild grasslands, and the thrill of spotting animals in their natural habitat. It felt like stepping into a living documentary — only this time, we were part of the frame.

Where Forest Meets River

The word “Dooars” means “doors,” gateways to Bhutan and Northeast India — and it truly feels like an entrance into another world.

Early mornings became our favorite ritual. We would step out just after sunrise and watch fog drift across silent forest roads. The light filtered gently through the sal trees, creating golden beams that made even casual family photos look cinematic.

The Murti River quickly became our peaceful escape. The kids played with smooth pebbles while we set up the tripod for long-exposure shots. As the sky shifted to pastel pinks and oranges, the river mirrored the colors beautifully. It was calm, minimal, and completely different from the excitement of the safaris.

The tea gardens added yet another texture to our journey. Endless rows of green stretched toward distant hills, forming perfect leading lines for photography. When workers in bright saris moved through the fields, it added color and life to our frames — and depth to our understanding of the region.

Into the Wild at Jaldapara National Park

The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly our visit to Jaldapara National Park. Known for the majestic Indian one-horned rhinoceros, this was the moment our children were most excited about.

We chose an early morning elephant safari. Sitting atop the elephant gave us a steady, elevated view across tall grasslands. When we spotted our first rhino emerging through the mist, there was complete silence — followed by wide-eyed amazement.

The soft morning light revealed the textures on the rhino’s thick skin. It wasn’t just a wildlife sighting; it felt powerful and humbling. Later, during our jeep safari, we saw deer grazing in backlit grasslands and a peacock fanning its feathers against a forest backdrop.

Wildlife photography here taught us patience. The best moments weren’t always dramatic — sometimes they were quiet, still, and deeply moving.

“I love the scents of winter! For me, it’s all about the feeling you get when you smell pumpkin spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, gingerbread and spruce.”

Exploring Gorumara National Park & Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary

Beyond Jaldapara, we explored Gorumara and Chapramari — each offering a slightly different rhythm.

From the watchtowers in Gorumara, we waited quietly as animals gathered near salt licks. We spotted gaur (Indian bison) and herds of spotted deer moving cautiously through open patches. The elevated view helped us compose clean, stable frames.

Chapramari felt more intimate — deeper forest, stronger contrasts of light and shadow. Sunlight pierced through sal trees, creating dramatic beams that made even a simple forest trail look mystical.

Birdlife thrilled us throughout the journey. Hornbills, kingfishers, and woodpeckers brought flashes of color to our telephoto frames. For our kids, ticking off bird sightings became a daily adventure.

Murti River: Our Quiet Family Moments

If Jaldapara was about thrill, Murti River was about stillness.

We experimented with slow shutter speeds to create silky water effects while the children skipped stones nearby. Framing the river with foreground rocks gave our images depth, and the symmetrical reflections during sunset were simply magical.

Those quiet evenings by the river became some of our most treasured family memories.

Stories from the Tea Gardens

Dooars is not only about wildlife — it’s also about people. We interacted with tea garden workers who generously allowed us to capture portraits after seeking permission.

The warmth in their smiles, baskets filled with fresh leaves, and candid laughter created storytelling images that felt genuine and respectful. Golden hour added a beautiful warmth to portraits, enriching skin tones and textures in the greenery around them.

Watching the Seasons Change

Though we visited during winter — the best time for wildlife sightings — we learned how dramatically Dooars transforms across seasons:

  • Winter (Nov–Feb): Clear skies, excellent safari visibility.
  • Spring (Mar–Apr): Blooming forests and vibrant birdlife.
  • Monsoon (Jun–Sep): Lush, saturated greens and dramatic clouds, though safari access can be limited.

Each season paints the landscape differently — from golden browns to deep emerald tones.

Why Dooars Touched Us Deeply

Dooars gave us three unforgettable elements in one compact region:

  • Diverse wildlife — rhinos, elephants, deer, birds
  • Scenic variety — forests, rivers, tea gardens
  • Ever-changing light — mist, golden hours, dramatic skies

But beyond the frames and compositions, it gave us shared moments — whispered excitement during safaris, peaceful river sunsets, and meaningful interactions with local communities.

Where Wilderness Framed Our Family Story

Our journey through Dooars was not just about checking off wildlife sightings. It was about immersion — listening to rustling grass, distant elephant calls, and flowing rivers.

Each photograph we captured now carries more than visual beauty — it carries memory.

For us at Wanderlust Snapshots, Dooars became more than a destination. It became a story of togetherness in the wild — a place where every sunrise felt like a new canvas, and every sunset reminded us why we travel as a family.
